Flood-affected farmers to receive vegetable seedlings

Posted: Wednesday, April 7, 2021. 11:13 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise informed that Minister Jose Mai will be issuing vegetable seedlings to farmers from the Belize and Cayo District that were affected by the flooding last year.

The donation was received from the OIRSA Regional Emergency Funds to assist vegetable farmers who were affected by the flooding caused by hurricane Eta and Iota.

In 2020, the Central American Ministers of Agriculture (CIRSA) approved the use of OIRSA Regional Emergency funds to assist affected farmers and livestock producers with re-establishing their production systems, rescuing of animals due to flooding, and safeguarding against pest and disease outbreaks as a result of the storms.

The Ministers had unanimously approved a budget of US$100,000 per affected country.
