By Rubén Morales Iglesias: What are the chances of your finding an ancient artifact? And then of finding it intact?

Well, from what he says, Ben Popik, owner of the famous The Truck Stop in San Pedro and a just did.

On Tuesday night, Popik, a former New York City comedian according to United onboard magazine Hemispheres, posted on Facebook a beautiful image of a Mayan pot he says he found in an underwater cave on the northern side of Ambergris Caye

“Many of you know about my enthusiastic love of diving and cave diving, so you’ll understand my excitement to share this milestone with you,” Popik wrote. “Yesterday, while exploring some new caves on the northernmost end of Ambergris Caye, my cave diving my cave diving buddy Arielle and I found this gorgeous, intact Mayan pot 70-feet below the ground above.

“Needless to say, we were ecstatic.”

Popik said the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) old them the Maya used that type of pot for rituals.

“We’ve already been in touch with an archaeologist from the National Institute of Culture & History, where we learned that this type of water-carrying pot was used by the Mayans for collecting water for sacred rituals.”

A very enthused Popik said they’ll continue searching the area.

“We’re going to go back later this week to take measurements and see if we can find other offerings. I’ll keep you posted.”

“Only in Belize!” he concluded.
