World Health Day commemorated amidst pandemic

Posted: Wednesday, April 7, 2021. 9:57 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Every year on April 7, the world commemorates World Health Day.

The first health assembly was held in 1948 and the celebration commenced in 1950 to create awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO).

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that has claimed over 2 million deaths, the World Health Organization is calling for a fairer and healthier world post-COVID-19.

To date, some 133 million people around the world have been infected by the virus and 22 million cases remain active.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the closure of many companies leaving millions jobless and shoving others into poverty.

The economic and social impacts continue to plague countries around the world.

The WHO has now issued 5 urgent calls for action including the need to invest in primary health care, the need for leaders to prioritize health and social protection, build safe, healthy and inclusive neighborhoods, strengthen data and health information systems and the equitable access to COVID-19 technologies.

In addition, World Health Day brings awareness to health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change.

The day gives an opportunity for focus on these important aspects of global health.
