Belize remain at 170 in the FIFA World Ranking

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After losing 2-0 to Haiti and beating Turks and Caicos Islands in the World Cup qualifiers late last month, Belize remain in the 170th spot in the FIFA World Ranking out of 210 countries.

Belize are 23 out of 35 in Concacaf.

Belize’s highest ranking was 127 in 2015. We’ve been in a downward spiral since then. Before 2015, our highest rankings were 141 in 2011 and 158 in 2002. FIFA.com says that Belize’s average ranking is 169 since the FIFA World Ranking was created in December 1992.

Belize’s lowest ranking was 201 in 2007.

We’ve been stuck at 170 since 2019 because of the COVID-19 forced inactivity.

Belize first entered the ranking at 173 in 1995.

In this month’s ranking, Belgium are first with 1,78.38 points, followed by France (1,747.3) and Brazil (1742.65).

England, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, and Denmark, in the order, complete the Top Ten.

In points, Belize did move up slightly going up from 974 points last month to 977.95 this month.

In Concacaf, Mexico, who fell out of the world’s Top Ten to 11th, are number one, followed by the US, Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Honduras in the Top Five.

Out of Belize’s World Cup qualifying group, Haiti are 10th in Concacaf and 83rd in the world, Nicaragua are 16 (147), and Turks and Caicos Islands are 32 (206). St Lucia who withdrew from the WC qualifiers are 24 (176).

San Marino are last at 210 with 804.71 points.

FIFA publishes a monthly ranking each month. It considers both official and friendly

FIFA-sanctioned games played by the “A” National Teams of member countries during the previous month. The formula, however, takes past performances and the ranking of opponents into consideration.

Since the ranking’s inception, Brazil have been at the top the longest. Other countries that have been at the top spot are Germany, Argentina, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
