By Zoila Palma: At today’s Sitting of the House of Representative, Prime Minister, John Briceno began the budget presentation by explaining the ‘dire’ economic situation that the country faces.
Briceno said that before the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy was already in recession.
Briceno says that his government is committed to implementing a revenue collection and spending process that is ‘just’ and in the national interest.
“In normal circumstances, the amount required to meet the demand of our constituencies is not enough but the mess we inherited widened the gap to an unmanageable degree,” Briceno said.
The Prime Minister also recognized his colleagues and social partners who have faced the situation with poise.
He also thanked those who participated in the budget consultations and said that this budget is about everyone.
“The IMF reported that the global economy shrunk by 3.5%, in Central America, it fell by 6% and Tourism dependent nations economy shrunk by 10%,” Briceno said.
