St. Vincent and the Grenadines issues evacuation order for area surrounding La Soufriere volcano

Posted: Friday, April 9, 2021. 8:25 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Dominica News Online reports that the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has issued an evacuation order for area surrounding La Soufriere volcano.

Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves issued the order Thursday afternoon via a live stream on Facebook, saying that the decision was based on advice given to him by the director of The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).

While the order will be officially published today, Gonsalves said that it took immediate effect and that all persons were barred from accessing the area, except for personnel involved in the evacuation effort.

St. Vincent is now on red alert meaning that an explosive eruption is imminent.

Gonsalves urged his people to remain calm and execute the evacuation in an orderly fashion.

This is a developing story.
