By Rubén Morales Iglesias: End of the World Marathon donated $19,000 to the Placencia Rotary Club.
A release posted on Facebook by End of the World on Sunday said Dan Edwards (R) presented a check valued at $19,000 on behalf of Chip Lovett and the End of the World Marathon to Harold Wallen (L), president of the Placencia Rotary Club, for the Rotary Scholarship fund.
End of the World Marathon said that “since its beginning in 2012, the End of the World Marathon has donated all proceeds to the Placencia Rotary Scholarship program, which funds high school, university, and trade school tuition for Belizean youth.”
Despite having to hold its 9th annual race virtually, End of the World Marathon said it was still able to raise $19,000 to keep sustaining the educational scholarships. Participants in the marathon or half marathon did so at multiple locations around the globe.
The End of the World Marathon says on its webpage runbelize.org that over the last eight years it has funded more than 100 high school scholarships, 30 university scholarships, and 20 vocational trade school scholarships awarded to Belizean youths.
“Thanks to our Gold-level sponsor RFG insurance, and other sponsors including Bowen & Bowen (Crystal Water and Powerade), VACASA, Maya Beach Hotel & Bistro, Turtle Inn, Sirenian Bay & Inky’s mini-golf, Total Time Chip Timing Service, Dolphin Productions, and the more than 150 runners and supporters, the 9th annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon was a “virtual” success,” said the End of the World Marathon. “This past year has been financially devastating for most of our sponsors and we are especially grateful for their generosity and commitment to the EOW during these extremely difficult times.”
End of the World Marathon singled out Ricardo Salazar of Total Time Chip Timing Service “for his extraordinary efforts coordinating with all the individual runners, compiling the results, and distributing medals and T-shirts.”
