By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United States is considering the idea of an economic alleviation program for Central America that would see the North American country sending cash payments to Central America said Reuters.
The economic aid program would have the objective of helping Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, countries known as the Northern Triangle.
Reuters reported that Robert Jackson, the White House’s southern border coordinator said that the US was considering the program but did not say how and to who the cash would be sent.
“We’re looking at all of the options to address both the economic reasons people may be migrating, as well as the protection and security reasons,” Jacobson said.
Reuters reported that the US Border Patrol detained approximately 168,000 persons in March at the US-Mexico border. That’s the highest since March 2001.
“The one thing I can promise you is the U.S. government isn’t going to be handing out money or checks to people,” Jacobson said.
But not everyone is in favor of the cash transfer program.
“It’s insulting to the millions of Americans who are out of work or facing despair in our country,” Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the US House of Representative said in a statement on Friday.
Another source told Reuters that the funds would be given to individuals through local and international non-governmental organizations.
Jacobson also said that though vaccines are a separate issue, the US government had not made any decision but that it is considering donating vaccines to the Northern Triangle countries.
Reuters said the Central American countries, frustrated in not getting enough vaccines, have started turning to China and Russia for help “with increasing success.”
