Back to school phase-in begins in Belize

Posted: Monday, April 12, 2021. 10:47 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology commenced the phased-in return of face-to-face instruction.

The Ministry says that the decision to return to the physical classroom is grounded in expert advice.

“The decision to return to  the physical classroom is grounded in the expert advice of our public health officials who have determined that it is now safe for us to begin this process in a gradual, responsible, and structured manner,” the Ministry said.

Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca says that only those schools that have made the decision to return to face-to-face instruction and have been approved by the Ministry of Education will be having in person classes.

“Our COVID education task force has worked hard over the past few months to engage with all relevant, key, education stakeholders to guide the re-opening plan of action,” Fonseca added.

Minister Fonseca extended gratitude to parents, students, teachers and stakeholders who have offered positive and useful recommendations to improve the Ministry’s plans.

In addition, the Minister said that everyone is being called upon to sacrifice but Belizeans are strong, resilient people and working together, we will emerge from this hour of darkness.

“Education must and will remain a central priority for our Government and families. Too much time has been lost and our most vulnerable students in our rural and poorest communities are falling even further behind,” Fonseca expressed.

He also said that returning to classes now is optional but the Ministry’s objective is to have all schools re-opened for face to face instruction by September 2021.
