Bermuda going into lockdown after Premier and many others test positive for COVID-19

Posted: Monday, April 12, 2021. 6:53 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Bermuda is instituting a lockdown for a minimum of seven days after a spike in COVID-19 cases that saw its Premier David Burt, among the infected, reports the Jamaica Gleaner.

Burt, now the fourth Caribbean leader to contract COVID-19, alongside the leaders of Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname, announced that the shelter-at-home policy would come into effect as of Tuesday, April 13.

“It is clear that the rate of spread is far more advanced than believed and the regulations put in place have not been enough to slow it down. We must act now as continued household mixing is leading to increased transmissions,” Burt said. “I know this is not the news many people wanted to hear. What is important is to remember the importance of staying at home and do not mix households.”

He explained at a press conference that all businesses apart from grocery stores, pharmacies, and gas stations would be closed and that those businesses would only be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Burt noted that there is no need for panic buying as grocery stores will also be returning to alphabetized days for customers. Banking services will also be limited. Burt also reminded that household mixing is prohibited.

The measures are being rolled out after more than 100 new cases were confirmed over the weekend along with two deaths, bringing Bermuda’s total number of cases up to 1,891 and the number of deaths up to 16.

Bermuda’s Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss other measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
