Did searing temperatures over the weekend cause thousands of chickens to die? Authorities investigate mass chicken kill in Spanish Lookout

Posted: Monday, April 12, 2021. 1:08 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Thousands of dead chickens were found discarded on the roadside in Spanish Lookout today and the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is trying to determine what happened.

Francisco Gutierrez, Acting Managing Director of BAHA told our newsroom that officers are currently out conducting investigations but have not completed their preliminary report as yet. Gutierrez said that at this time the suspicion is that the high temperatures over the weekend caused the deaths; however, officers are still conducting the investigation to determine if there were other factors.

Notably, discarding the animals on the roadside is against public health regulations and the producer/producers responsible may be subject to a penalty when discovered. Reports are that there were around 15,000 dead chickens, which were being raised for consumption. It remains to be seen what impact the chicken kill will have on market availability, as the high temperatures experienced over the weekend are forecast to continue over the next few days.

According to the National Meteorological Service of Belize, inland temperatures over the weekend went as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Today’s inland temperature highs are forecast to range around 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

This is a developing story.
