By Rubén Morales Iglesias: International reports say India has surpassed Brazil as the second-worst hit country in the world by COVID-19.
England’s Daily Mail reported that on Monday tens of thousands of Hindus gathered on the banks of the River Ganges River to bathe as part of the second Shahi Snan (holy bathing day) of the religious festival Kumbh Mela ignoring all COVID-19 safety measures. This happened as India overnight surpassed Brazil with 168,912 COVID-19 on Sunday.
Reuters reports that India now has 13.53 million cases, overtaking Brazil’s 13.45 million cases. The United States leads the global count with 31.2 million cases.
CNBC said that approximately 83% of the new cases were reported in 10 states, including the western state of Maharashtra, home to India’s financial capital Mumbai.
In April alone, India has recorded 1.37 million infections.
The Daily Mail reports that the Kumbh Mela festival began in January and ends by the end of the month. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been criticized for allowing the festival to go ahead despite the rising COVID-19 infections.
