By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Poultry Association (BPA) explains that the chicken kill reported in Spanish Lookout today is no cause for alarm by the public with respect to the market availability of chicken.
The Association explained that the country has been experiencing successive days of extremely hot weather and that chickens are very susceptible to heat exposure. The BPA said that despite having cooling fans to reduce heat stress on birds, losing chickens due to heat stress is a common occurrence.
“Every year during the dry season we experience losses due to these heat waves and farmers need to be vigilant to minimize the losses in their barns,” the BPA said. “Currently there is no disease in our barns that is causing any deaths in birds as is being pushed by some people on social media accounts.”
The association stressed that the industry survivability ratio for the last three years has been above 95 percent and that customers can rest assured that the losses due to heat stress will neither affect availability nor the price of poultry products.
