By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Águilas Doradas, Colombian football club, on Sunday fielded only seven players for an official First Division game due to COVID-19.
On Sunday morning before the match, the Colombian club said on Twitter they were being forced by Colombia’s professional league Dimayor to play with only seven players, the minimum required by FIFA for a team to be allowed to play an official match.
Águilas Doradas said they could field only seven players for the match since 16 players got infected with COVID-19 and seven others were injured. The team said that four members of their coaching staff had also contracted COVID-19.
Águilas Doradas said they had asked Dimayor to postpone their game against Boyacá Chicó but their petition was denied. They played the game to avoid severe sanctions and lost 3-0.
Before the match started at the Rionegro stadium, the seven Águilas Doradas players held up two signs that said, “Fair Play” and “Life is more important.”
“We want to inform the public that Talento Dorado SA tried everything so that the 18th match taking place today [Sunday] in Rionegro (Águilas Doradas vs Boyacá Chicó) would be postponed with the firm conviction of protecting sporting integrity; still, every argument put forward was denied,” said the club in the statement they posted on Twitter.
