Mexican President focusing efforts to stop child migrants

By Zoila Palma: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said today that he will visit Mexico’s southern border to discuss with governors how to stop the smuggling of child migrants.

The issue is a growing concern for the United States where over 21,000 unaccompanied migrant children are in US custody.

The US government has asked the Governments of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to assist in lowering the number of child migrants arriving at its border.

In addition, the US Government said that it had reached agreements with the countries to increase troops to crack down on migrant smuggling.

“To protect children we are going to reinforce the surveillance, the protection, the care on our southern border because it’s to defend human rights,” Obrador said.

There has been an increase in the number of children arriving at the US border which has become an ongoing issue for the US Government.
