By Zoila Palma: Alex Tyler, the owner of Goldfish Swim School in Illinois, USA is impacting Belizean children during a trip with a team of volunteers to Gales Point Manatee, Belize.
In February, Tyler launched a “Candygram” campaign to raise $9,000 to support children in Gales Point Manatee, a fishing village in Belize.
The Daily Herald reports that in 2014, Tyler visited Belize on a church mission trip and met joyful Belizeans.
That trip turned into additional visits where he began teaching the children how to swim.
The “CandyGram” campaign managed to raise $9,000 to pay the tuition of 45 students in Belize.
Tyler said that the money will be used to pay for 1 year of high school tuition for 45 students.
“The scholarships are a way that we can have a lasting impact on the village for future generations as more and more children have the opportunity to get an education and share their skills and knowledge with their community,” he said.
Tyler says he believes that teaching the children safety skills is essential so they understand how to be safe in the water.
“Our Goldfish students and families have supported our efforts in Gales Point, Belize, in many ways over the years. I think that it is a great opportunity for kids to connect with peers and learn about another culture and way of life. Despite differences in our day-to-day lives, we all have a lot in common,” Tyler said.
