United Democratic Party calls out government for hypocrisy after Commission of Inquiry live broadcast is cut off; questions the entire process

By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is condemning the Government of Belize (GOB) for cutting the broadcast for the Commission of Inquiry (COI) while the Union Representative Luke Martinez made a statement accusing the Briceno administration of selling off government assets in the same manner that gave rise to the COI.

“The Public Service Union representative Luke Martinez was literally silenced when he dared to call out the current administration for the hypocrisy it is demonstrating by engaging in the sale of numerous Government assets in violation of stipulated public service process and procedure, even as the so-called inquiry this government commissioned into the alleged sale of public assets under the last administration is in progress,” the UDP said.

The party went on to question the entire process and demanded to know: how long the COI would last, how much it is costing the people of Belize, and what is the point of holding the COI if the commission cannot ask about the sale of government assets under the current administration?

The party said that the cutting of the broadcast confirms a lack of authenticity or usefulness of the exercise, and “exposes” that the Briceño Administration is pursuing a political agenda with no interest in implementing meaningful reform in the management of public assets.
