By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize announced today that there will be a Special Sitting of the House of Representatives on Thursday, April 22.

The date marks the first of the two-day budget debate in the lower house of parliament.

Prime Minister John Briceno presented the national budget, titled “Today’s Sacrifice: Tomorrow’s Triumph,”  the first for his administration, on Friday, April 9.

During his presentation, he stressed that the economy was suffering and placed much of the blame at the feet of the previous administration.

“How we navigate through this extraordinary crisis; the extent to which discipline, sacrifice and solidarity prevail; the efficacy of our home-crafted Medium Term Economic & Fiscal Recovery Plan, will, in sum, determine the well-being of our people, the resiliency of the public finances and the durability of the value of the Belizean dollar,” Briceno said.

The controversial budget included projected savings that government would realize from implementing a 10 percent salary cut for teachers and public officers, as well as freezing of their annual increments.

The opposition, United Democratic Party (UDP), condemned the budget, saying it lacked creativity and humanity and swore that they would delve into the fine details of the budget to be ready for the debate on April 22.
