By Benjamin Flowers: Speednet Communications Limited (SMART) has publicly denied claims made by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) that the company owes $11.1 million in General Sales Tax (GST) to the Government of Belize.
SMART issued a statement today which said, “As of 15th April 2021, Speednet communications Ltd. has no outstanding GST taxes due to the Government of Belize.”
The company went on to say that it has routinely ensured that it has met all payment obligations and has been issued a Certificate of Good Standing on April 14, which is valid for six months.
The BNTU picketed in front of SMART’s offices countrywide today, as well as in front of Belize Telemedia Limited demanding that the companies pay their overdue GST to enhance Belize’s economic position, stressing that increased revenue collection is what GOB should be focusing on, instead of implementing a 10 percent cut to teachers’ salaries.
