By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Everybody is eligible as of today,” said United States president Joe Biden in a White House video urging all American adults to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“Folks, I have good news,” Biden said. “Everybody is eligible, as of today, to get the vaccine. We have enough of it; you need to be protected, and you need, in turn, to protect your neighbors and your family. So please, get the vaccine.”

The Washington Post said adults over 16 in all the United States, plus Puerto Rico, are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than half of all US adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Initially, Biden had said that he expected that by May 1 all adult Americans would be eligible for the vaccine, but on April 6 he announced that he was moving up the deadline to April 19.

At the time, ABC News said Biden expressed optimism about the speed at which the vaccines were being rolled out but added that the US was not yet out of the woods with regards to the pandemic.

“Let me be deadly earnest with you: We aren’t at the finish line. We still have a lot of work to do. We’re still in a life and death race against this virus,” Biden said then.

“For months I’ve been telling Americans to get vaccinated when it’s your turn. Well, it’s your turn now,” Biden said last night in NBC’s vaccination show – Roll Up Your Sleeves.

“All adults are eligible to get their shot. It’s free, it’s convenient, and it’s the most important thing you can do to protect yourself from COVID-19 including the new variants we’re seeing. To protect your loved ones, to help our economy recover, and to help things get back to normal.”

“Look, we’re making tremendous progress, but we’re still in the race against this virus,” Biden added. “And we need to vaccinate tens of millions of more Americans. I’ve said it before, we can have a safe and happy 4th of July with your family and friends in small groups in your backyard. But that’s going to take everyone doing their part.”
