By Aaron Humes: Eighteen workers of Belize Telemedia Limited have been made redundant effective today.
According to the company’s Executive Chairman, Mark Lizarraga, Telemedia will officially comment via a statement to be released in the course of today, which we await.
Approximately a month ago, the company was forced to deny reports that it was releasing as many as 200 workers; 20 staff members working on contract were released as those contracts came, in the company’s statement issued at the time, to a natural end.
Union representing BTL employees, the Belize Communications Workers Union (BCWU) explained in its own statement that the company, based on data showing an unimproved financial position, is expanding on austerity measures that were previously implemented. Those date back to May 2020 and had included forgoing and deferring certain benefits and a salary freeze as part of a cost optimization exercise.
The BCWU release dated today states, “In spite of those initiatives, the company has presented data that show that its financial position has not improved, and as such, made the decision to undertake a redundancy exercise to improve efficiency and the continuous reduction in operation”.
