Last rites for Hughington Williams, former Commissioner of Police

By Aaron Humes: Former Commissioner of Police, Hughington Williams, 73, was seen off to eternal rest this morning in his native Belmopan by three former fellow Commissioners, a former deputy Commissioner and other rank and file of the Belize Police Department.

In what current Commissioner and attendee Chester Williams described as a “semi-official funeral,” police officers acted as pall bearers and in other official funeral duties.

While Hughington Williams and Chester Williams are not, to the best of our knowledge, related in any way, they shared the same last name and terminal Department rank and the latter entered during the former’s final years of service.

“I am lucky or fortunate to be the second Williams to be Commissioner – when you look at the Wall of Fame for Commissioners, the only time two [last] names appear is Hughington Williams and Chester Williams. He was an excellent police officer, he served with distinction; and so it is only fitting on the occasion of his passing that the Belize Police Department through the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries show our full support to the Williams family…it goes to show that as a country, we are grateful for the service that Mr Williams offered to this country of ours,” the current Commissioner told reporters.

Hughington Williams was Commissioner from 1999 to 2002, and died on April 12. He is survived by his wife and three children. May he rest in peace.
