Public Service Union and Belize National Teacher’s Union plan daily protests against salary cut

Posted: Monday, April 19, 2021. 9:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: The Public Service Union (PSU) and the Belize National Teacher’s Union (BNTU) began today their week of daily act of protests against the Government of Belize’s proposed salary cuts.

BNTU started out its protest activities last Friday morning picketing in front of businesses they claim owe taxes to the government.

Bridges and Highways across the country have been blocked by members of the unions this morning.

They listed today’s event of protest as engine and mechanical problems on Highways across the country.

The PSU noted that it will press forward until demanded legislations including implementation of UNCAC and other transparency and accountability legislations is maintained and reinforced.

On Tuesday, the unions plan to host a protest walk in yellow shirt in all municipalities.

Then on Wednesday, they listed ‘Financial stress’ to have a medical and mental health check up day.

A rotating budget debate demonstration will be held on Thursday and Friday in Belmopan.

Meanwhile, the BNTU plans to have leaders appear on talk shows tomorrow morning to defend their cause.

In addition, they will host a symbolic ribbon-cutting, boycotting gas stations, and embarking on an education campaign.

In continuing with the BNTU’s campaign, on Wednesday, April 21, the teachers plan to boycott SMART and BTL.

A highway demonstration will be held by the BNTU on Thursday and on Friday, the BNTU will commence strike action.

“Teachers will walk out of their classes to begin the strike,” BNTU noted.
