Taiwan Legislature passes mutual legal assistance pact with Belize

By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s legislature passed a bill today that would serve as a basis for a bilateral treaty with Belize to allow mutual legal assistance on criminal matters.

This means that Taiwan and Belize would be able to provide assistance to each other on criminal investigations, prosecutions, court proceedings, and crime prevention.

In addition, Taiwanese officials say that the pact will assist in effective collaboration to jointly combat transnational crime,

It will provide the opportunity for defendants and witnesses to give statements via videoconferencing, and the relevant authorities will be able to present questions during the process.

Focus Taiwan noted that the pact reiterates Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its judicial cooperation with Belize on criminal matters.
