The end of the Castro rule in Cuba

By Zoila Palma: It is the end of the Castro rule in Cuba, after 6 decades of ruling by brothers Fidel and Raul, a journey that began with the 1959 Cuban revolution.

Fidel, renowned as one of the most controversial politicians of his era continues to be remembered for his historical legacy and the Cuban revolution.

On Friday, his brother Raul announced that he is stepping down as the head of the Communist Party. Raul said that he feels that he fulfilled his mission and is confident in the future of the fatherland.

“As long as I live I will be ready with my foot in the stirrup to defend the homeland, the revolution, and socialism with more force than ever,” Raul said.

While he did not indicate who his successor will be, he had indicated favor to Miguel Diaz Canel, who succeeded him as president in 2018.

For the first time in 60 years, Cubans will not have a Castro formally guiding the affairs of the country.

The transition comes at a critical time for the nation that is faced with mounting challenges brought forth by COVID-19 and restrictions imposed by the former US administration that have battered their economy.
