By Zoila Palma: Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, Valentino Shal shared via his Facebook page, how farmers in Toledo District prepare and export beans to Guatemala.
Shal noted that San Vicente farmers load up their truck with fresh beans which are taken to the neighboring village of Jalacte.
In Jalacte, the beans are loaded on horseback and cross the border where Guatemalan buyers are waiting.
According to Shal, the farmers export corn, beans, pepitos, cacao, and cattle on a daily basis.
“These are very productive villages but they lack infrastructure including farmer’s roads, running water, and electricity. They have been neglected for so long but that is about to change,” Shal said.
Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Mai applauded the farmers.
“Way to go. We need to export much more than what we are currently doing,” Mai expressed.
