Unions block roads, highways at start of a week of protest

Posted: Monday, April 19, 2021. 8:24 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize’s trade unions have stepped up the pressure on Government, beginning a week-long series of industrial actions leading to a full-out protest during the Budget Debate later this week in Belmopan.

Members of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) and Public Service Union (PSU) have caused traffic blockage on the Haulover Bridge outside Ladyville; at the Hattieville bridge on the George Price Highway and at the Burdon Canal Bridge at the entrance to Belize City. The PSU noted that their members would have engine and mechanical problems in the municipalities and the major highways this morning, Monday.

BNTU president Senator Elena Smith confirmed to Channel 5 News that her organization intended to cause minimal but visual disruption as part of its plans.

The unions are protesting planned salary cuts for employees of the public and teaching service which they feel are not justified.
