BREAKING: Belize recommends Froyla Tzalam to be next Governor General

By Aaron Humes: Mopan Maya educator and activist, Froyla Tzalam, is the choice of the Government to succeed Sir Colville Young as Governor-general, BBN has confirmed.

Tzalam, presently executive director of the Sarstoon-Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM), is from San Antonio Village in the Toledo District.  She has earned a first degree in Anthropology and a Masters Degree in Rural Development.

She is an avid promoter of the Maya culture, has authored a grammar book on Mopan Maya, and also contributed to a book titled New Vision based on an African Maya History Project. 

Tzalam, upon her appointment, would be Belize’s third Governor-general and the second woman after the late Dr. Dame Minita Gordon.

Sir Colville Young’s retirement takes effect at the end of the month. He was first appointed in November 1993, for a record run as viceroy of Her Majesty in Belize spanning 28 years and four Prime Ministers.
