Public Service Union Vice President Dean Flowers: “I acquired my [multiple] parcels of land legally”

Posted: Tuesday, April 20, 2021. 5:49 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: On Monday it came to light that Public Service Union Vice President, Dean Flowers, acquired several parcels of land during the 13-year Dean Barrow United Democratic Party (UDP) administration, which Flowers says was all obtained legally and not because of any political affiliation.

In an exclusive interview with Breaking Belize News this afternoon, Flowers stressed that the leaking of the documents online showing the lands he acquired, is an attempt from the government to try and deflect from the issues that the PSU and the wider Joint Union Negotiating Team is raising about corruption and the lack of political will to implement good governance reforms.

“I did not create the system. The system provides for any Belizean to apply for a piece of land. I have applied for a piece of land, I have purchased a piece of land, and I have been gifted a piece of land,” Flowers said. “I have also been gifted a parcel of land by my relative and I make no apology for having what I have acquired in the most legal of ways.”

Flowers went on to say that, unlike sitting and former ministers, and their relatives, his name is not attached to thousands of acres of land nor does he owe the government millions of dollars in taxes. He went on to say that he has the names of those ministers and their siblings as well as the amounts due in taxes but will not release them because doing so will not address the major economic issues Belize is facing due to poor governance.

Flowers said that the Briceno administration continues to promote nepotism and cronyism since being elected back in 2020; has continued to hire new public officers in the wake of a moratorium of such which further increases the wage bill; disposes of assets without any transparent process, and refuses to address tax leakages as well as tax avoidance.

“Me owning two or three pieces of land has nothing to do with those facts which are at the detriment of the Belizean people,” Flowers said. “My two, three pieces of land does not put the Belizean economy or the Belizean people at risk,” Flowers added.

The documents that surfaced were official government documents from the Ministry of Natural Resources showing Flowers owning land in San Pedro, Orange Walk, Dangriga, and Belmopan.
