By Zoila Palma: The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Monday that the world can bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control in months.
Ghebreyesus says that once the resources are distributed fairly, the COVID-19 pandemic can be held under control.
Meanwhile, climate change activist, Greta Thunberg said it was unethical that rich countries were prioritizing their younger citizens for vaccination ahead of vulnerable groups in developing countries.
“We have the tools to bring this pandemic under control in a matter of months, if we apply them consistently and equitably,” Ghebreyesus expressed.
In addition, he expressed concern over COVID-19 variants.
With relation to COVID-19 vaccines, Thunberg shared that 1 in 4 people in rich countries have been vaccinated and only 1 in 500 people in poorer countries had received a shot.
She called on everyone to prioritize the most vulnerable.
WHO epidemiologist, Maria van Kerkhove said that the latest surge in COVID-19 infections worldwide could be caused by social mixing.
The World Health Organization through COVAX continues to call for equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for low income countries.
