Queen Elizabeth turns 95 today

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: This is the first birthday Queen Elizabeth celebrates without the Duke of Edinburgh for the last 73 years since they got married in 1947.

Born on April 21, 1926, Queen Elizabeth is 95 today. She is the world’s longest reigning monarch having been Queen of England, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for 69 years.

Elizabeth was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

The Royal Family is in mourning following the death of Queen’s Elizabeth’s husband, Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, so there is no public celebration of her birthday, though official ceremonies are normally held on June.

“While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world,” Queen Elizabeth said in her birthday message.

“My family and I would like to thank you for all the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.”

Belize used to observe the Queen’s birthday on April 21 until it changed it to Commonwealth Day on May 24.
