Benque Viejo del Carmen’s House of Culture observes Earth Day planting trees around Belize’s westernmost town

Posted: Thursday, April 22, 2021. 1:18 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In observation of Earth Day, the Benque Viejo del Carmen House of Culture/NICH (BHOC) is observing the reforestation and conservation day planting trees at key public spaces in Belize’s westernmost town.

Nalleli Yacab, coordinator of the Benque House of Culture, said that it’s part of the effort to keep Benque beautiful and to promote clean air.

“We are called to make positive contributions and be good stewards of mother nature, because this is our home and it is not just one day, but for a lifetime,” said the BHOC on Facebook.

With this year’s theme ‘Rеѕtоrе оur Еаrth,’ the BHOC is joining the efforts by the Веlіzе Аudubоn Ѕосіеtу (ВАЅ) of ‘Grееnіng асrоѕѕ Веlіzе,’ and the Forestry Department’s partnership with municipalities to plant more trees.  The BAS is еnсоurаging Веlіzеаnѕ to engage in reforestation by рlаnting trees.

“We join the Belize Audubon Society ‘Green Initiative’ and we celebrate it green style, by planting several trees in some public spaces, as natural resources for the years to come,” BHOC said on Facebook. “Conservation awareness starts at home and we encourage you all to join green and positive initiatives.”

In effect, Yacab said that the Belize Audobon Society donated the flamboyant and cedar trees for today’s planting.

Yacab said trees are being planted at the Benque House of Culture, Helpage Benque, the Pedro Guerra Mena Park, BECOL basketball court/Primero de Mayo Park, and Mopan Technical High School.

She said that the Benque Town Council, the Rotaract Club of Benque Viejo, Youth Leaders of Benque’s HOC, the Youth Talk Show and the Benque Advocacy Group that helped with the planting are adopting the trees for their maintenance.

“We thank all the partnerships established to carry on this significant project. We thank the Belize Audubon Society for gifting us 7 saplings, Mayor Jorge Rosales and the Town Council, Mr. Edgar Cocom for securing wooden material for proper signage for the tree’s and for approving public spaces, Azzor Requena (Rotaract for paint), Helaman Chi Artists for signage and artwork , Emil Hernandez for collecting saplings, Sindy & Osvaldo from Rosales Carpentry & Furniture Shop for organizing the wood cuts & pieces,” the BHOC said.

“Over the coming days we are going to continue planting more trees, at least 20 more, in public places courtesy of donating families here in Benque,” Yacab said. “We encourage you all to adopt a tree from a public space, nurture and care for it.”

This year the Belize Audobon Society said it gave families mahogany trees in promotion of their ‘Рlаnt а Маhоgаnу trее’ project.

“Соnѕеrvаtіоn аwаrеnеѕѕ ѕtаrtѕ аt hоmе аnd іn оur соmmunіtіеѕ, ѕо ВАЅ іѕ рrоud tо раrtnеr wіth соmmunіtіеѕ tо еnсоurаgе gооd ѕtеwаrdѕhір оf оur nаturаl rеѕоurсеѕ fоr уеаrѕ tо соmе,” thе ВАЅ said.
