Nelson Mis – Benque Viejo del Carmen’s Green Guardian

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Benque House of Culture/NICH on Wednesday, April 21, gave recognition to Nelson Mis who they call Benque’s Green Guardian because of his volunteer beautifying efforts at the Benque Centennial Memorial Park.

“We would like to give recognition to one of our Green Guardians, Mr. Nelson Mis, an active community member, who has been creating and designing some unique masterpieces at our beloved, Centennial Memorial Park,” Benque House of Culture (BHOC) said on their Facebook page.

“Nelson Mis is a volunteer who has been exploring landscaping for the past 3 years, he has been recycling, collecting caps, metals from buses, trash cans and even small rocks on the side of the streets in our community. You can catch Nelson behind a wheelbarrow watering the plants or collecting material during the late evenings,” said BHOC.

“Nelson’s efforts to beautify this green area come with much effort, dedication and love for plants. These beauties inspire and uplift everyone’s spirit at our most beloved community space.”

According to Nalleli Yacab at the Benque House of Culture, Mis has been planting all around the park and they now have a complete line of 125 flowering plants. She said he is now dedicating his time to planting orchids on the branches of trees in the park.

Yacab said Mis works at Galen University but that due to the pandemic, he is now only working two days a week. As they say in Benque Viejo del Carmen, “No hay mal que por bien no venga” (Every cloud has a silver lining). As unfortunate as his situation may be, it gives him time to work on his volunteering initiative.

Yacab said that Mis appeals to the community to promote a culture of care and appreciation for plants.

Yacab asked that if anyone can help Mis with material to continue doing his volunteer beautification, they can reach him at 638-4330 or through the Benque House of Culture. Plants, materials for constructing his artwork, material for signs are some of the things that would do him well to continue his labour of love.

Yacab also said that should anyone require Mis’ services they can call him at the above number.

“We invite you to share a positive word and encourage Nelson and many others who are contributing to the positive growth and development of our community,” the Benque House of Culture concluded.
