Speaker: “House meetings are not street brawls”

By Aaron Humes: Speaker of the House of Representatives Valerie Woods opened today’s meeting by referring to an incident that ended the last.

Member for Cayo South Julius Espat refused to yield to Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber and told him to “sit down boy,” to which the Opposition objected as having racial overtones.

The Speaker said she met with the Prime Minister and others to remind of the procedure she represents: that while debate may be passionate and loud, it must not lose any aspect of decorum.

Members were reminded that the Standing Orders limited manner of interruption, the nature of points of order and conduct generally. Also, while there can be exceptions from time to time, the House of Representatives is always addressed in the national language of English.

The members are again typically reminded of this before the start of the Budget debate.
