Teachers Union serves government notice of strike action

Posted: Thursday, April 22, 2021. 8:46 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has served the Government of Belize (GOB) with official notice that teachers will be taking strike action.

In a letter sent to the Ministry of Education, BNTU National President Elena Smith notified that the teachers will officially be on strike as of Monday, April 26.

“The grounds for such industrial action is to express our disappointment and dissatisfaction with the Government’s intended draconian measures of exorbitant salary cuts and increment freeze for the next three years,” the BNTU said.

The union demanded that the government resume negotiations with a view to address the current economic crisis with “workable and reasonable solutions” and also demanded that government cease “corrupt practices” which has put the country in such a crisis. The BNTU said that it remains committed to working with its partners to bring the impasse with GOB to an end.

The Public Service Union (PSU) has also served GOB with a notice of industrial action over the salary cuts and increment freeze.
