By Rubén Morales Iglesias: United States vice president Kamala Harris plans to travel to Central America in June to meet with the leaders of the Northern Triangle countries, but before that she will have a virtual meeting with Guatemalan president Alejandro Giammattei next week, Fox news said.
Harris has been charged with dealing with the Central American migration crisis affecting the region and the United States.
Just last month over 172,000 Central American migrants made their way to the United States causing a crisis at the Mexico-United States border and a problem for security forces in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico trying to control them.
Harris will meet with Giammattei virtually on Monday to talk about the migrant crisis.
Fox News said that Harris’ plans for the meeting were confirmed Wednesday by Symone Sanders, Harris’ senior adviser and chief spokeswoman.
In June, Harris should travel to meet personally with Northern Triangle leaders in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Recently, US special envoy Ricardo Zúñiga visited Guatemala and El Salvador and met with Giammattei in Guatemala but was snubbed by president Nayib Bukele in El Salvador. However, Zúñiga said he had fruitful meetings with political and community leaders in both countries where he stressed that good governance is necessary to help the countries to improve their economies and help stem migration.
Harris will follow up Monday’s meeting with Giammattei with a virtual roundtable on Tuesday with representatives from Guatemalan community-based organizations who will be hosted for event by the US Embassy in Guatemala according to Sanders.
Harris already spoke with Giammattei on March 30 just after US president Joe Biden appointed her to lead the United States’ response to the migrant crisis that has developed at the US-Mexico border. At the time Harris reportedly promised to help Guatemala with economic opportunities to help alleviate the migrant crisis.
Though the US vice president already had a roundtable discussion in the US to deal with the situation on April 14, she has received flak from Republicans who accuse her of being a failure since she has not yet visited the border nor has given a press conference on the matter.
Harris has also met with special envoy Zuniga and has spoken to Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to discuss the issue.
