By Aaron Humes: Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Mining and area representative of Lake Independence, Cordel Hyde, sought to both reassure and rally Belizeans to begin the hard work of remaking the nation in leading off the second day of the Budget Debate.
Hyde maintains that he understands the “hardship and pain” to come for public officers and teachers who will not have savings to tide them over, and so the authorities – utilities, schools, banks and credit unions – will be asked to have continued forbearance. “If you give us a chance, we can do better,” he vowed.
But it is better to do something now and be accused of going too far, he said, than do nothing and face the spectre of retrenchment and devaluation, ruing the day they refused the cut. He also promised to regularly review with the unions the economic position, re-establish the cost savings committee and cut out the waste, graft and tax-dodging, even among those of his party.
Comparing the treatment of Belizeans to the pain of a broken romantic relationship, Hyde admits that “successive administrations have broken your heart, and it’s hard to believe anything your new man says or your new woman for that matter, because there’s not a man in here who hasn’t had a broken heart before… but it doesn’t mean you stop, you learn to love smarter, but you don’t stop loving,” Hyde noted.
“Our issues are not irreconcilable; the unions are not our enemies – they can’t be; they are our partners – they have to be,” said Hyde, adding that he despises the “personal attacks” laid on union leadership.
