Worldwide caravans planned against US blockade against Cuba

Posted: Saturday, April 24, 2021. 3:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Today, Saturday, according to Prensa Latina, there will be a worldwide demonstration against the United States’ economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.

According to the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), the initiative will include emigrants and associations of Cubans living in different regions, parliamentarians, scholars, artists, as well as graduates from Cuba.

Parks, streets, and other public places will provide space for activists, who in caravans of cars, bicycles, and motorcycles, walks, sit-ins in front of U.S. embassies, and through social networks, will share images, statements, and videos in rejection of the policy.

Belize is expected to join supporters in the Latin American and Caribbean region from Mexico to Argentina.

Major cities in the U.S. itself (Miami, New York, Washington, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, Tampa, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Indianapolis) and in Canada (Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg) will also see participation.

In Europe, mobilizations have been convened in Brussels, Belgium, on the esplanade of the Atomium; in the squares of Cibeles (in Madrid) and Catalonia (Barcelona), both in Spain; walks in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, and a bike ride from the Elephant and Castle crossroads to Lambeth Bridge, in the United Kingdom.

Actions will also take place in Russia, Italy, France, Serbia, Ireland, Angola, and the Australian cities of Brisbane, Canberra, and Perth.

After the failed Bay of Pigs invasion sponsored by the U.S. a week ago today, April 17, 1961, the U.S. turned to economic sanctions of Cuba in protest of its socialist-leaning government under Fidel Castro. Despite recent efforts to thaw relations and Cuba losing both Castro brothers from government, the blockade remains, forcing Cuba to turn elsewhere and internally to sustain itself.
