Guatemalan prosecutors say Jimmy Morales immunity should be stripped

Posted: Sunday, April 25, 2021. 10:15 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: This week, Guatemalan prosecutors requested that Former President, Jimmy Morales be stripped of his immunity and face charges for violating the mandate of the United Nations anti corruption mission, CICIG.

During his term in office from 2016 to 2020, he still has immunity since he became a representative to the Central American Parliament.

Morales’ campaign focused on battling corruption, however, as investigations commenced on Morales and his family, he declared the head of the mission, persona non grata.

Morales’ decision to oust the head of the anti-corruption commission led to the request to strip his immunity by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.

CICIG had worked in Guatemala for 12 years and was successful in taking down criminal networks and even investigated Former President Otto Perez Molina and Vice President, Roxana Baldetti.
