By Zoila Palma: Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador introduced on Thursday his proposed “Planting a Life” reforestation program, reports Yahoo News.
Lopez Obrador is seeking funding from the USA for a massive expansion of the program into Central America as a way to cease migration from the region.
The program would see 1 billion fruit and timber trees planted. Lopez Obrador cited that the program would allow for farmers to work their own lands in their home country.
However, environmentalists are questioning if planting the commercial species on land- held by native forests may be a good plan.
Lopez Obrador directed himself to US President Biden, encouraging the administration to support the program in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
“The proposal is that we extend this program to southeastern Mexico and Central America, to plant 3 billion more tress and create 1.2 million jobs,” the President stated.
In Mexico, 700,000 trees have been planted under the program providing jobs for 450,000 Mexican farmers with a stipend of $225 monthly.
