Public officer to be suspended following traffic mishap

By Aaron Humes: A public officer with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing will be recommended for suspension without pay after crashing a Department vehicle in San Ignacio Town on Friday night.

According to a Ministry statement, the unnamed officer, a civil engineer, was out monitoring contract works on the Philip Goldson and George price Highways in the Belize District and was returning to his hometown of Benque Viejo del Carmen Town.

He crashed into a concrete culvert headwall and overturned near the compound of the Center for Employment Training (CET) in San Ignacio.

Police are investigating, but the Ministry has recommended suspension to the Public Service Commission for a breach of the internal vehicle use policy and that he pay for damages to the vehicle (known as a surcharge).

Nonetheless, the Ministry states that because some technical officers are on call to respond to road-related emergencies at all hours of the day, they need and are assigned their vehicles to perform their duties; the implication being that this officer should have put away his after finishing his duties for the day.

The Ministry reiterated that the use and security of all assets including vehicles are of paramount importance and is being managed in compliance with the official stores and financial orders.
