By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Chelsea pull one on Real Madrid on a rainy evening at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium in Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals.
American striker Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the 14th minute approaching a goal down the left side, pulling out goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois making him commit, then cutting inside and firing into the net past two Madrid defenders for Chelsea to take the 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes before, Pulisic had had an easier break within the goal area, but Courtois was able to block his shot.
Real Madrid responded in the 24th minute with a diagonal shot by Karim Benzema but the shot just grazed the right post.
Five minutes late, Benzema got the tying goal for the home-side for them to save face in Madrid.
Down the stretch, the rain slowed a bit but would not stop as both sides tried to improve on their score but to no avail.
Chelsea will now have the edge going home with the very important away goal when they meet again next week Wednesday.
Tomorrow, Paris Saint-Germain host Manchester City at 1 pm at the Parc des Princes in Paris in the other semifinal.
