By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today advised fully vaccinated people that they may do without masks unless they are in crowded places, said CNN.
The CDC said that fully vaccinated people are those for whom two weeks have passed after their second shot of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and after the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
“If you are fully vaccinated and want to attend a small outdoor gathering with people who are vaccinated and unvaccinated, or dine at an outdoor restaurant with friends from multiple households, the science shows if you are vaccinated, you can do so safely unmasked,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a virtual White House briefing on Tuesday according to CNN.
But people who are unvaccinated or have only received one dose of the vaccine, still have to wear a mask at small outdoor gatherings or when dining with friends.
The CDC said that there are instances where fully vaccinated people should still wear a mask.
“Generally, for vaccinated people, outdoor activities without a mask are safe. However, we continue to recommend masking in crowded outdoor settings and venues, such as packed stadiums and concerts where there is decreased ability to maintain physical distance and where many unvaccinated people may also be present,” Walensky said.
“We will continue to recommend this until widespread vaccination is achieved.”
The CDC website says “large gatherings” occur when there are “many people from multiple households in a private or public space.”
The CDC said that everyone, vaccinated or not, should keep wearing masks in indoor public spaces, such as malls, movie theaters or museums.
US president Joe Biden used the new CDC mask guidance to urge all Americans to get vaccinated.
“The bottom line is clear, if you’re vaccinated, you can do more things, more safely, both outdoors as well as indoors,” Biden said during the White House briefing encouraging all Americans to get vaccinated.
“So for those who haven’t gotten their vaccination yet, especially if you’re younger, or thinking you don’t need it, this is another great reason to go get vaccinated. Now.”
“It’s never been easier,” he said. “And once you’re fully vaccinated, you can go without a mask when you’re outside, and away from big crowds.”
Scientists have said that infections happen more indoors than outdoors and in crowded places and that reasoning has guided the CDC in their decision.
“There are increasing data that suggests that most of the transmission is happening indoors rather than outdoors – less than 10% of documented transmission in many studies have occurred outdoors,” Walensky said.
“We also know that there’s an almost 20-fold increased risk of transmission in the indoor setting than in the outdoor setting. That, coupled with the fact that we now have 37% of people over the age of 18 fully vaccinated and the fact that our case rates are now starting to come down, motivated our change in guidance,” Walensky said.
Walensky said that the CDC update its guidance once more people get vaccinated and the number of cases keeps going down.
