By Aaron Humes: The proposals to spend the people’s money are as “cold and callous” as can be, charged Mesopotamia’s area representative Shyne Barrow, because the government making them appears to have forgotten the most vulnerable.
“Madam Speaker, this Budget fails at its most basic responsibility, to spend the taxpayer’s dollars – because these Budgets are not UDP money or PUP money, they are the people’s money,” he reminded.
He registered a complaint on behalf of his constituency while noting that there appears to be no complaint by PUP representatives about getting grocery bag assistance. He cited a case of a senior citizen who got one of 500 grocery bags assembled from donations to his office, who told him that when she went to the Ministry of Human Development for assistance, they told her to go back to her representative.
“That is not what the people voted for, Madam Speaker. The people voted for better; the people voted for the #planBelize promise to continue unemployment relief to all qualified people until the COVID-19 crisis abates,” Barrow said, adding that he does not feel it matters if the UDP get back to the government in 4 years’ time, so he would pray for the PUP to fail; on the contrary, he hopes they succeed because they are responsible for improving the lot of the unemployed and underemployed.
And their pain makes sure he is kept up at night, Shyne admitted, so the claim by Minister Dolores Balderamos-Garcia that she is not responsible for poverty leaves him asking, ‘Where do we go?’ And closing one’s eyes and pretending it’s another day does not change the reality that ‘we are in a state of emergency, we are not in a state of blame.’
