By Aaron Humes: Minister responsible for Holidays Kareem Musa has announced the addition of Freedom Day on August 1 and removal of Columbus Day/Pan American Day on October 12 from the annual list of public and bank holidays.
Known as Emancipation Day or August Monday elsewhere in the Caribbean, it marks the formal announcement of the end of slavery in the 1860s.
This coming weekend sees Labour Day on May 1, a Saturday; Commonwealth/Sovereign’s Day remains on May 24.
St. George’s Caye Day is a Friday and Independence Day a Tuesday.
Garifuna Settlement Day is a Friday and the Christmas weekend will run from Friday, December 24 to Monday, December 28.
