By Aaron Humes: With respect to the elder in the House Mike Espat, said Shyne Barrow during his Friday Budget Debate presentation, he is sorry they did not get attention for infrastructure during the United Democratic Party’s terms in office.
But now is not the time for that, he said; now is the time for social assistance, not a “my turn” budget or a “kickback” budget focused on roads and roundabouts, as now-Prime Minister John Briceno once described the 2017 Budget proposed by Dean Barrow.
Hypocritically, said the younger Barrow, they complained when the UDP was in office about the rich infrastructure contracts being handed out, but now that they are in the position to cancel and re-route the funds, they have dishonestly continued the contracts and tried to lie to Belizeans about the true nature of Belize’s crisis – not caused by “UDP-13” or “Hurricane Musa” but by COVID-19.
And why the UDP is on the other side of the House now doesn’t matter, he continued; the people made their decision in November and March and voted for the PUP to fix the problem and find solutions.
He reminded that the PUP promised $30 million in stimulus to tourism and $50 million generally, but it has not been reflected in the Budget, and the word for Belizeans is, “don’t comfort me with your words; let me see it in the Budget,” he said.
