Prime Minister Briceno: The majority of teachers and public officers are aware of the ‘dire’ financial situation

By Zoila Palma: This morning on Love FM Morning’s Show, Prime Minister John Briceno said that the majority of teachers and public officers are aware of Belize’s financial situation.

“ I don’t want to have a back and forth about the unions. I believe that the majority of teachers and public officers are with us. Even the leaders when we talk to them one on one, understand what the Government is doing,” Briceno said.

In relation to UNCAC, Briceno explained that it is not a law – it is a convention against corruption that the Government signed that will take certain actions.

“ The previous government signed unto UNCAC but there was nothing done,” Briceno said.

Briceno called on the unions to be reasonable because Government has tabled resolutions and demonstrated all that it is going to do to address the financial crisis that Belize is in.

“We need to have a grip on the financial crisis that the country is facing. This financial year ending, Government borrowed $370 million more than what was approved. The last 2 budgets, the former Prime Minister borrowed $700 million to pay its recurrent expenditures,” Briceno explained.

The Prime Minister said that this means the government doesn’t have money to pay salaries, to purchase fuel, or to run the government.

“They know because they are the ones inside looking at the numbers. They know how the Government has been doing hand to mouth. Borrowing almost a million dollars a day,” Briceno said.
