Ex-National Football team coach Honduran Chelato Uclés dies in Honduras

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ex-National Football team coach Honduran José de la Paz Herrera, better known as Chelato Uclés, died last night at the age of 80 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Uclés was the coach who took Honduras to their first World Cup in 1982 in Spain. He was considered a hero in Honduras.

In 2010, Uclés was contracted by the Football Federation of Belize to coach the Belize Men’s National Football Team. He coached the national side during 2010 and 2011.

In Honduras, Uclés had several stints at the helm of the Honduran national football team and also coached several teams including the Honduran Big Four of Olimpia, Motagua, Marathon, and Real España. Uclés also coach Santos Laguna in Mexico.

Fighting diabetes for many years, Uclés underwent heart surgery last Saturday according to Honduran sports daily Diez but died last night at a hospital in Tegucigalpa.
