Ministry of Agriculture, Fооd Ѕесurіtу, аnd Еntеrрrіѕе’s completes Day One of its virtual Annual General Meeting in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After some technological hiccups this morning, this afternoon’s session of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fооd Ѕесurіtу, аnd Еntеrрrіѕе’s virtual Annual General Meeting went off without a hitch.

The agricultural sector has a lot of challenges so the Research, Development, and Innovation Center has to be innovative, relevant and responsive to the emerging issues, challenges, and opportunities in agriculture said Ina Sánchez, Director of at the Research, Development, and Innovation Center.

Sánchez said that no matter what factors affect the quality and quantity of the agricultural production, the country’s populace still expects agriculture to solve many issues such increasing farmers’ income, maintaining food security, alleviating poverty alleviation, creating jobs, and contributing more foreign exchange earnings.

Clifford Martinez, the director of extension, reviewed the extension services offered by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Dr. Victoriano Pascual, director of Water Management, presented on projects of the Ministry of Agriculture and also on climate change management. Pascual said the objective is to improve and increase production of vegetables and also the improvement of livestock in the country through better water management.

He also talked about the beekeeping and honey projects at the Ministry. The belief is that we can have better quality of honey in the Belize market Pascual said. Last year a group went to Guatemala to train, he said, and right now the Ministry is training interns to improve the industry.

Registrar of the Cooperatives Department Gareth Murrillo advised farmers how they can access the resources offered by the department.

Jose Trejo closed off the first day of the Agriculture AGM with a talk on the Bureau of Standards.

 

The AGM closes tomorrow with presentations by the partners in development: the Pesticides Control Board, BAHA, the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute, Resilient Rural Belize, the Belize Livestock Producers Association, the Directorate for International Trade, DFC, Beltraide, and the Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute in the morning session.

The afternoon session will see presentations by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the Inter-American Institute for Agriculture Cooperation on Agriculture, OIRSA, the Belize-Taiwan ICDF Project, the Belize-Mexico (Amexcid Project) and the Ya’axché Conservation Trust.
