By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize has more farms than farmers, according to Milagro Matus, Policy Analyst in the Policy & Statistics Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fооd Ѕесurіtу, аnd Еntеrрrіѕе (MOA).
Speaking at the MOA’s virtual Annual General Meeting on Thursday, Matus said the Extension Department’s registration system says Belize has 12,403 registered farmers and 13,866 registered farms.
According to the Belize Agriculture Information Management System (BAIMS), 28% percent of the farmers are in the Corozal District, 26% in Orange Walk, 18% in Cayo, 17% in Toledo, and only 5.5% in both the Stann Creek and Belize Districts.
Corozal is also the leader in the number of farms with 32.1%, Orange Walk 23.6% while Cayo has 17.7%, Toledo 16.8%, Stann Creek 5.1%, and Belize 4.7%.
Men constitute 78% of the total number of farmers and women, 22%.
In age range, 44% are 40-59 years of age, followed by 25% in the 60-79 years-old range and 24% in the 25-39 age bracket. Four percent are between 16 and 24 while 3% are 80 years or older.
